A NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER
In the eighties, the Croatian capital Zagreb was, after London,
the busiest town for American movie co-productions. One day, a
producer from the film company Jadran Film called me to meet
Zoran Perisic, who just got an Oscar for special effects for
Superman: The Movie. We became friends and during my stay in L.A.
for some international song festivals, I was impressed by his
invention* in 3-D movies.
After a while, he called from London and asked me, "Can you come
to London tomorrow? Maybe you can write music for my movie." I
cancelled my tennis, and after a two-hour flight, I was in
London. When I came to Pinewood, I realised that producer
Richard Herland is also a tennis player and the whole time we
spoke about tennis, because there was a Wimbledon tournament
going on. Finally, Zoran said, "Enough with tennis, Alfi came
for the music." The next day on the way to Wimbledon, and after
hearing my symphonic scores, Herland told me that I would be the
composer for the movie Gunbus (Sky Bandits in the USA).
Recording with the National Philharmonic Orchestra was fantastic.
As I conducted, my every move was immediately transformed into a
musical performance with precise, dynamic, excellent musicality
and brio. All the soloists were perfect. I had a brilliant sound
engineer who also made Beatles records, the famous Keith Grant.
After hearing the music and seeing the movie, one critic wrote,
"We always think that only American and British composers can
write good symphonic music for movies, but this is proof that
somebody from a small country can write even better." — Alfi
